about

Need a good cry? Enjoy this tale of death on the prairie.

lyrics

We've heard his story before: how he came west after the war had been won. He even took a native wife; she brought some comfort to a life, otherwise cold as driven snow. But he still missed the ocean that he swam in long ago.
And they knew not how to grieve, for the things they'd never see. But they knew enough to yearn for the things they'd never learn. Like how the light escaped the eyes of their youngest child.
They brought six children to this world. Four bouncing boys and two fine girls, but the youngest died at the age of five. Next morning she was buried in the frozen riverside.
And they knew not how to grieve, for the things she'd never see. But they knew enough to yearn for the things she'd never learn. Like how the light, so softly flies, cross the Great Divide.
The rest grew up and moved away. They built the towns and rode the trains, cross the great divide and the mountains high. Yet still their souls were anchored in that frozen river side.
And they knew not how to grieve, for the things they'd never see. But they knew enough to burn for the things they'd never learn. Like how the light, so softly flies, cross the Great Divide. How light, so swiftly flies, cross the Great Divide. Like how the light, so swiftly flies, cross the Great Divide. How light, so swiftly flies, cross the Great Divide.
